When I hear people bemoan the future of this earth, I tell them, "You've never met my students!"

My husband and I moved to Kauaʻi from Wisconsin a little over five years ago to live closer to our son. The environment, views, and trails still delight us every day! Our daughter visits as often as she can, and always enjoys the break from the harsh Wisconsin weather.

I have taught for over 25 years in a variety of subjects, including English, ESL, Speech Communications, and Theater. Throughout those 25+ years in various schools, I have found the students at Island School to be intelligent, kind, and resilient. It is a daily gift to spend time with the students that attend this school.

I am happiest teaching, traveling, and with my loved ones. Outside of the classroom I can be found exploring our island home.

The educational philosophy at Island School is distinct in that it values creativity and transforms the classroom into more than just a space.

Kauaʻi is where I was born and raised. After completing my studies at Kauaʻi High School and Kauaʻi Community College, I earned an associate's degree in early childhood education.

I was initially acquainted with Island School when I started completing hours of observation at Nā Pua Keiki for my classes at KCC. This experience inspired me to volunteer and eventually get a full-time job with Nā Pua Keiki.

I've been part of Island School for two years. I have been working for five years as a hostess and server at Smith’s Tropical Paradise. Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, going to the beach, and overnight fishing.

Island School has given me a community and a place to continue my passion of teaching.

I was born and raised in Arvada, Colorado. I have a masters degree in mental health counseling from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. I worked as a licensed crisis intervention counselor for 10 years until my children were born.

I received my teaching certification through alternative placement in Oklahoma. I have taught for 23 years as a first grade teacher and love my job!

I met my husband of 42 years while I was attending Colorado State University. I spent most of my life as a military spouse traveling and living in some most extraordinary places. We retired two years ago and made Kauaʻi our home. I am a huge fan of the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball team. When I am not at Island School, I love to sew and swim, and am a seal and turtle volunteer.

Island School is exactly what I need… The type of community and student body that allows passions to grow.

I grew up in a small town in California called Marysville, just north of Sacramento and moved to Arkansas for college. When I graduated from college with a BA in Theater Education, I received a phone call inviting me to join the Island School team. I’ve been on Kauaʻi and with Island School for the past year.

Before teaching, I worked a variety of jobs including lifeguarding, construction, directing, and acting professionally.

As the Island School high school and college counselor, I find great joy in supporting and guiding students as they learn about themselves, cultivate their strengths, and step toward their first adult adventures after high school.

I have worked in education throughout my adult life, first as a high school English teacher right out of college and most recently as a high school counselor at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado for 7 years before moving here to Kauaʻi and starting my work at Island School in 2017.

My husband, Andrew, and I have 8 children between us who are now all either working or in college. My 3 daughters graduated from Island School in 2018, 2020, and 2023.  When I am not at work, I love singing, practicing hula or other forms of dance, hiking, playing with my dog, or getting lost in the pages of a good book.

The connections I’ve made with students, staff, and families are what make every day rewarding and meaningful at Island School.

I grew up in a small town in New Jersey and went to Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania, where I spent my time studying French and education, and pitching for the softball team. I’ve taught English in France, French in New Jersey and Mississippi, and now social studies on Kaua’i. Each school I have worked at has been vastly different, and has had an impact on my teaching style and educational philosophy.

The opportunity to move here with my husband was unexpected, but I am so grateful to be a part of the Island School team and to be immersed in this vibrant community, where I learn so much every day. Outside of school, you can find me reading or enjoying the arts on island at concerts and plays.

Island School truly is an ʻohana that makes you feel welcome and makes you want to keep coming back.

I am a Pre-Kindergarten teacher at Nā Pua Keiki. I have been working at Nā Pua Keiki since 2013. I was raised on Kaua`i, attended Island School from 2nd through 6th grade when it was at its original site in Kealia. I graduated from Kapaʻa High School and after spending time at the University of Northern Colorado for college, I returned back to Hawaiʻi and attended the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.

After getting married, my husband and I returned back to Kauaʻi to raise our three children. I currently live in Moloaʻa on a ranch where my weekends are filled with ranch work, in the rodeo scene with my youngest daughter, or at the beach. My two older children attended Island School until 7th and 9th grade, then traveled to Oʻahu to attend Kamehameha Schools in Kapālama. My youngest is currently attending Island School.

I am a true believer that the community Island School provides sets our keiki up for success in life.

I enjoy teaching children how to problem solve, be inspired, and love learning.

I hold a Masters in Educational Administration, a math and technology endorsement, and  a Gifted & Talented Certificate.  Before coming to Island School, I worked in public education for 30 years in all areas including leadership and teacher development, and I also received the Utah Credit Union’s Teacher of the Year award. Becoming a math teacher has been everything I hoped for. There hasn’t been a dull moment since!

Ever since I was a little girl, I've loved school—even before I officially started. While most kids played "house," I played "school." My cousin and I would spend hours creating worksheets, using art easels as chalkboards, arranging furniture into "classrooms," and grading each other's work with colored pens.

The night before school started was one of my favorite times of the year, second only to Christmas Eve. I'd lie awake with excitement, imagining new beginnings, teachers, classmates, and all the things I'd learn.

When I reached college, I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to be. Most of my family worked in engineering, so being a daddy’s girl I followed suit, graduating with a degree in engineering. I quickly found myself bored and lonely. After a year, I re-evaluated my priorities and decided I’d go back to school to get my master’s in education.

My three kids attend Island School and are flourishing.  My son loves sports and is able to enjoy this passion at Island School. My daughters participate in chorus and theater. As I sit in the audience during their performances, the love that pours from their teachers brings tears to my eyes. Walking through campus, I see how happy my three kids and their peers are. Students here are given the tools they need to succeed.

Island School is a uniquely diverse campus, a home to keiki and kūpuna, North and West, kānaka and newcomers. It's hard to describe how rewarding it is to watch these people learn from each other and care for one another.

I was born under a mountain in Vermont and raised on a farm in Kīlauea -- it's been a privilege to call both places home. After working as an educator and a software developer in Vancouver and Berlin in my early 20s, I was brought back to Kaua'i during COVID. Seeing the island community work together on that cause made me fall in love with the island again. A job posting at Island School helped me combine my teaching and technology backgrounds and gave me a chance to reconnect with my alma mater (Island School c/o 2012).

I love the collaboration amongst teachers and staff here at Island School.

I’m a Kauaʻi girl born and raised with a desire to experience city life. I knew I wanted to be far enough to be “on my own”, but close enough for a plane ride home. California became my new home in 2010 where I studied music at Biola University earning my Bachelors in Music Education. After graduating, I continued to share my love for music as a piano instructor, assistant choir director, and substitute teacher throughout southern California.

Six years flew by and I began to miss the large family gatherings, familiar smiling faces, and slower pace of life. Knowing I was newly graduated and looking to start my career, a former teacher reached out about a music teacher position on Kaua’i. Next thing I know I’m back home continuing to share my love of music.

The first thing that is striking about this campus is the tended green landscape and open air classrooms.

I grew up in Detroit: Motown, autos, and music. Then by the hand of fate, I was whisked off by the Wisconsin Indian Teacher Corps where I was paid to learn how to teach Native American Children. I left reservation life with a BA, husband, and a lifelong adventure plan: Africa, the Caribbean, urban and rural America, and China.

Four children and four grandchildren later, I would land here. Overseas, I learned what I didn’t know about teaching. So in stints back to the US, I picked up a few more degrees. I heard of my job through Indeed, and I have not been disappointed. The first thing that is striking about this campus is the tended green landscape and open air classrooms. I appreciate the diversity of children and promotion of cultural values and activities. Island School is a world class gem.

    Middle School English Teacher

After 25 years, middle school students are still my favorite.

One of my most significant memories is “playing school” in the basement with my stuffed animal "students". Following my mom’s footsteps as an educator became my goal at a childhood age, and I am grateful to continue this meaningful profession at Island School.

While nurturing responsible learners and engaging with collaborative professionals throughout my career in Iowa, Colorado, Chile, and Kauaʻi, I have learned that empathizing with young adults, respecting their energy, and valuing their struggles builds confidence and sparks learning.

I still love the challenges of upper education, and moreover, middle school students are still my favorite. I encourage literacy, critical thinking, and self-reflection. Creating a positive rapport with my students is a priority in order to promote a favorable learning environment. Students deserve a captivating education, therefore, I strive to do my personal best in fostering memorable experiences that enrich responsibility and self-efficacy.

I was drawn to Island School’s abundant opportunities that foster a love of learning, especially as a community that seeks to connect the heart and mind.

My name is Abbie Laase, Pre-Kindergarten teacher with Nā Pua Keiki since 2016. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, my husband and I came to Kauaʻi with a deep appreciation for the culture we  would be immersing ourselves in, and my time at Island School has only strengthened that.

My love for education was rooted on the mainland at North Seattle Community College and my previous Pre-K program where I taught for many years. It is now being well watered and pruned on Kauaʻi, as I continue to be a lifelong learner. Recently, my passion for literacy has taken me down a path to understand the science of reading and how to make it accessible to every type of brain.  What inspires my heart is spending time with my husband and our beloved rescue dogs, walking, gardening and cooking!

I studied visual arts and filmmaking at University of North Carolina School of the Arts and photography at Maryland Institute, College of Art. Before working at Island School I owned an arts and entertainment company in New York City and worked full-time as a professional body painter and theatrical makeup artist.

I believe education is a living, breathing art form.

I have been curious about human development most of my life.  When I became a mother of three girls (all Island School Graduates) I made a shift from the business world into education.  Alex, Jordan, and Laura (my three daughters) are the inspiration of my journey into early childhood education.  I am in my 28th year with 18 years at Island School as part of my journey.

I chose early education to make a difference in the world for young children, families, and our community.  I believe education is a living, breathing art form. This requires incredible intentionality and heart.  I enjoy my leadership role in supporting other early childhood educators in their professional journey.

I hold my BS in Business Administration (Xavier University), a MA in Early Childhood Education (Concordia University), and a Leadership Certification in Early Childhood Education (Harvard University).  In my spare time I enjoy hanging out with family, working out with my Playground 808 community, serving in a leadership role at my church, and many outdoor activities that connect me to nature.

Island School provides the education I wish I received in primary and secondary school.

I grew up in Milford, Connecticut and attended my local public school, where I was salutatorian. I studied English Literature at Yale University. After graduation, I began teaching English for New Haven Public Schools.

Writing, art and surfing called me to Venice Beach, California, where I started an SAT tutoring business, two of my early tutees earning perfect scores. Demolished by the daily commute on the 405, however, I searched for ways to reconnect with my small-town roots. When I visited Kaua’i in 2012, I found my Shangri-la. I began teaching at Island School soon thereafter.

I earned my Master’s degree from the Bread Loaf School of English in 2019. I wake up every morning inspired to teach Island School’s curious and thoughtful students and overjoyed that I don’t have to sit in traffic. I’ve been teaching here for thirteen years and still never look back.

Here, school is a part of life as a whole ...and learning holds deep meaning.

Art has never been set aside in an ivory tower for me. Art supplies have always flooded my world. A sixth-generation Texan raised by strong Texas women, art was a safe space to express myself. To make art is to notice what is around and discover what is within. The artists in my childhood changed what I thought I could excel at, fail at, and grow through.

In 2016, I earned my B.S. in Therapeutic Recreation with a minor in Art and Design- Painting, from Texas State University. I practiced as a CTRS with adults with developmental disabilities, and never stopped my own work and private lessons as a visual artist. In 2020, I began teaching here at Island School. Reaching all children to find their artistic lens is my sincere passion.

I appreciate being part of a school community filled with vibrant and diverse voices and perspectives.

I am a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and spent my childhood eating delicious Creole and Cajun food and celebrating Mardi Gras every year.

I've worked in many schools throughout the mainland for the past 20 years, in both rural and urban settings. Most recently, I was the Director of Admissions at Crossroads School in Santa Monica, CA and prior to this role, I worked at Marlborough School in Los Angeles. My passions are supporting schools through growth, change, and adaptation. I have a particular affinity for outreach initiatives, strategic planning, belonging and inclusion work and crafting long-lasting partnerships with other schools and non-profit organizations.

I attended Tulane University for my undergraduate degree with majors in English and Sociology and received my masters in education from Vanderbilt University. I moved to Kaua'i two years ago with my children and love exploring the beauty and magic of this place. Besides hiking and exploring our beaches, I love to skydive, try new recipes and dance.
