Fine Arts
We encourage and facilitate the integration of the arts into other subject areas and seek to encourage and develop risk-taking, initiative, and confidence in artistic endeavors and expressions. We believe the strength of our arts education lies in our performance-based curriculum and see arts education and experiences as necessary for all students' academic, personal, and emotional growth.

The Fine Arts department facilitates the development of performance and artistic skills while nurturing individuality and creativity, and strives to inspire all students to develop a creative spirit and viable strategies for creative and personal expression. Enrichment activities guide students through performance-based experiences designed to increase their cultural awareness, engage them in higher-level thinking skills, expand their creativity, and enhance their experience both within and beyond school. The department dedicates itself to making the arts accessible to all students while developing communication, collaboration, critical thinking, innovation, and creative and artistic skills.

Theater Arts
Students in elementary, middle, and high school study theatre arts in some form. In elementary school, theatre arts classes are offered in third and fifth grades. Middle school students are enrolled in fine arts classes, rotating each semester between music, visual arts, and theatre arts classes. High school students are required to take theatre arts electives and select these from a range of classes including improvisation, acting, stagecraft, play production, and scene study. Each year major theatre arts events are produced by Island School students and staff, including two high school plays, a middle school play, and a fifth grade play.

Chorus
Chorus is offered from 4th grade to12th grade, split amongst elementary, middle and high school. Throughout the year, students will perform a variety of music, work on growing their voices both individually and collectively, and have two opportunities to perform in the Winter and Spring concerts. Visual Arts
Students in elementary, middle, and high school study visual arts in some form. In elementary school, regular art classes are an integral part every students' weekly education through grades five. Middle school students are enrolled in fine arts classes, rotating each semester between music, visual arts, and theater arts classes. High school students are required to take visual arts electives and select these from a range of classes including ceramics, drawing, art history, painting, mixed media, independent studies, and other content-specific visual arts courses. Each year visual arts students share work on campus and at exhibitions at local art galleries and participate in local and statewide art competitions.

Music
Students in elementary, middle, and high school study music in some form. Regular music classes are an integral part of every student's weekly education in grades K-5. Middle school students are enrolled in fine arts classes, rotating each semester between music, visual arts, and theatre arts classes. High school students are required to take music electives and select these from a range of classes including beginning and advanced ukulele, music theory, piano, music appreciation, independent studies, and other content-specific music courses. Each year major musical events are produced by Island School students and staff, including our annual May Day performance.
