Island School’s mission statement and philosophy guide the development of the elementary curriculum and all of its programs. Our curriculum focuses on teaching the whole child through meaningful academic programming in mathematics, literature, writing, science, intentional social and emotional skill development, and extensive enrichment classes in art, drama, Hawaiian Studies, music, and physical education. Our program is designed to have student-centered and collaborative learning, differentiated instruction, real-world relevance, and is grounded in fostering a growth mindset.
Experienced and dedicated elementary teachers, along with teacher aids in every classroom, implement research-based practices and focus on the continuous improvement of each child’s knowledge and skills. Island School students are assessed regularly throughout the school year using
MAP testing, and the results assist teachers supporting each students’ development and growth in reading and math. Our student to teacher ratio is no more than 1:12 which allows for our educators to truly know and support their students. We believe that a meaningful relationship between students and their teachers contributes to a high-quality learning environment by focusing on the individual student's growth as well as providing meaningful experiential activities both in and outside the classroom.
