New Board Member Introductions

Island School is proud to announce that Lyndsey Haraguchi-Nakayama and Peter King have joined Island School’s Board of Directors starting the fall of 2024, bringing their exceptional leadership experience, community service, and passion as the Board strategically leads the way in fulfilling Island School’s mission today and beyond, “Educating the mind, inspiring the heart. Preparing Kauaʻi youth to lead lives of significance.”

“We are excited and honored to have Lyndsey and Peter join us as members of the Board,” said Board Chair Sam Pratt. “Not only are they leaders in business and nonprofit boards, but they also both have deep connections to Kauaʻi and are committed to Island School’s mission to help guide our School into the future.”

Haraguchi-Nakayama is the Co-Owner of Hanalei Taro and a 5th generation kalo farmer of their family farm which has grown taro for over 100 years.  She is the Education Administrator of Nonprofit Ho`opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill Nonprofit Museum and has served on many other nonprofit boards including Kauaʻi Taro Growers Association, Kaua’i Christian Academy, and UH Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. She has received a Doctorate of Education and Masters of Business Administration, and has been recognized as a leader in Hawaiʻi for farming, gardens for sustainability, and supporting local farm fresh sustainability. She has been featured as a speaker at many business leadership conferences, farm, and food events throughout Hawaiʻi. Haraguchi-Nakayama and her spouse, Brad Nakayama, have two children at Island school, Lyla ’25 and Bradyn ’28. “I am thankful that our children attend Island School and am honored to help give back to the School.”

King’s affiliation with Island school began as a student from 3rd through 8th grade. After time away, he, and his spouse Kori later returned to Kaua’i and enrolled their two sons, Braydon ’21 and Holbrook ’26.  King previously served on the Island School Board, was the former Island School Alumni Association president, and served as a former Island School teacher, serving as MS and HS Enrichment/Elective faculty member for MS Technology, HS Engineering, Yearbook, and MS Place Based Inquiry.  He received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Masters of Science degree in Geography.  He is currently a GIS (Geographic Information Science) practitioner and volunteers at various nonprofit organizations including Mālama Nā ʻApapa, Kauaʻi Museum, and Waiʻoli Corporation. “I have seen the difference Island School has made not just with students and family, but also with the Kauaʻi community at large.”  As a lifelong learner and teacher, King believes teachers are the lifeblood of a school, stating, “I will look for opportunities where we can continue to support teachers in their professional development and in practicing their craft.”

Lyndsey Haraguchi-Nakayama and Peter King are highly respected leaders in our community. We are deeply grateful that they will lend their talents, perspectives, and experience to guiding and supporting the future success of our School.
