Island School seeks an Assistant Chef. Under the direction of the Head Chef, the assistant chef will perform supportive functions in the Food Service department which includes assisting in preparation of school lunches and other meals as needed directed by the Head Chef with a start date of January 6, 2025 for the 2024-2025 school year. The position will assist with purchasing and receiving of food, kitchen supplies and managing inventory control. The candidate will include setup and clean up of food service areas of the kitchen and cafeteria tables and microwaves for lunch service; including daily washing and sanitization of dishes, pots, and pans; the cleaning and maintenance of kitchen equipment, and cleaning of food prep areas including floors. The candidate should have experience working in food preparation, be reliable, detail oriented, highly organized, able to multitask and meet deadlines. Salary range: $45,000 - $50,000 annually depending on experience.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Skills/Knowledge: Knowledge and experience in food preparation and food safety required.
Education/Training: Must have a high-school diploma (able to read, write, measure, and compute); training in food service preferred.
Experience: Must have experience in food preparation and pot and dish washing; and be able to interact professionally with others within the job function.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Must be able to distinguish between private and general information and keep private information confidential; and be governed by the rules of conduct and procedures set forth within the Island School Employee Handbook.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS – under the auspices of the Executive Assistant and Head Chef:
Maintain the highest standards of safety and cleanliness in job functions.
Assist with food preparation, such as chopping, slicing and measuring ingredients.
Follow property food safety and hygiene procedures, and ensure that food safety standards are met.
Support Head Chef in cooking and assembling dishes.
Assist in the daily set up and clean up of the kitchen and services areas including the Main Hall.
Perform major cleaning of refrigerators and storerooms at regularly scheduled intervals as required.
Assist in the preparation and serving of food in a quick and pleasant manner.
Demonstrate willingness to learn various jobs in the lunchroom and participate in discussion meetings for improvement.
Report for duty when needed or as directed for special events including set up and break down.
