Keiki will embark on a weekly "Walking Wednesday" adventure around our neighborhood. Our walk may take us across the street to the tree tunnel at the back of our main campus. It may be exploring different areas of KCC campus. Perhaps it will be down the road to the bamboo forest.
This week we went to the Monkeypod Tree. Our keiki were introduced to “Kilo”. In Hawaiian culture, the word “kilo” can mean different things, including to watch, observe , examine, or forecast. It can also refer to a cultural practice of quietly observing and focusing on the less obvious aspects of the environment. This practice can allow our keiki to develop a relationship to place, and become more self aware. We will practice kilo when we go on our walks and field trips and remind ourselves to slow down and observe our surroundings before exploring.
Here are a few things they noticed during Kilo:
• “I heard birds”
• “I heard the wind”
• “A lot of the leaves falling off the branches“
With practice, keiki can become keen observers and mindful of their surroundings. For example, we can kilo when we go to the beach with our ‘ohana. Maybe we notice the waves are big and it’s not safe to go swimming.
