Learning Voyages - February 18 - 21, 2025

On the basis of our foundation, our founding mothers wrote “An invitation,” in which they would create a school where “learning is fun because it relates to real interests,” and where  “Our Island is one great learning resource.” Island School, in the context of our mission, Educating the mind, inspiring the heart. Preparing Kauaʻi youth to lead lives of significance, looks forward to our 6th annual Learning Voyages, February 18th - 21st.  

Our goals for the Learning Voyages are to give our students the opportunity to develop long withstanding, meaningful relationships with classmates, teachers, and community members and practice deeper learning skills such as working collaboratively, communicating effectively, thinking critically and developing leadership skills.  In reaching beyond school walls, students will have the opportunity to develop a sense of place and develop an appreciation of our Island surroundings. Through specialized lessons and odysseys, High School students will acquire 21st century skills from various experiences.  Perhaps students will experience something different that will trigger a newfound passion.
 
For students in Grades 9th-12th, Learning Voyages are designed as a Grade Level experience, each with a distinguished theme. Teachers have been working in teams to design a developmentally appropriate and immersive experience for students at each grade level: 

9th Grade: Being a Voyager
Our youngest high school students will embark on a week focused on what it means to be a Voyager at Island School including team-building activities, canoe paddling, the power of the ocean, traditional star navigation, exploring our campus and island, and engaging in meaningful service-learning projects. This experience will instill the values of collaboration and community engagement that are fundamental to what it means to be an Island School student.


10th Grade: Hawaiian Culture
The 10th Grade Learning Voyage Week celebrates the Hawaiian proverbs I ka wā ma mua, ka wā ma hope ("the future is in the past") and Ma ka hana ka ʻike (“knowledge is gained by experience) by exploring the themes of Mālama (caring for self, others, and the environment) and Lōkahi (teamwork and collaboration). This immersive experience combines cultural, educational, and social activities to strengthen community bonds while offering students a glimpse into life in the past. Students will engage in hands-on learning about Hawaiian history, food systems, and environmental stewardship, culminating in a class pāʻina featuring traditional food, music, and class bonding activities.

 
 
11th Grade - Independence and Responsibility
This year, our junior class will focus on the theme of independence and responsibility, gaining valuable life skills that will prepare them for the future. Throughout the week, students will learn to care for themselves and support one another through hands-on experiences in orientation, cooking, DIY skills, and basic maintenance. The week will conclude with an exciting adventure to the West Side, culminating in a visit to the Waimea Town Celebration.
Additionally, college visits qualify for an excused absence. If you plan to visit a college, please complete the designated form here, which will be shared with the counselor for follow-up on requirements.

12th Grade: Graduation Preparation, Career Exploration/College Readiness
Each senior will be assigned a case manager who will help guide them through their Learning Voyage experience, offering support and ensuring they meet documentation requirements. Our oldest students will enjoy greater flexibility in designing their experience, choosing from the following options:
  • Community Service – Fulfilling graduation requirements through meaningful service work. (Must be documented with forms and pictures.)
  • College Visit Trip with Family – Exploring potential colleges. (Must be documented by creating a presentation to share in Junior Counseling with Ms. McMullen.)
  • Job Shadowing or Internship – Gaining hands-on experience in a career field of interest. (Must be documented with a letter from a mentor.)
  • Spain Trip – Students attending this trip are already confirmed.
This opportunity allows students to take ownership of their learning while preparing for their future paths. Seniors are working on filling out this Learning Voyage Accountability Form in Senior Seminar.

Teachers have been working hard to plan and develop these experiences for students. Attendance is expected and required as part of the Island School curriculum. As we continue our planning process, we look forward to the opportunity to further engage with our community members,  community organizations and explore our curriculum even deeper.  More details for the 2025 Learning Voyages will follow as you hear directly from each planning team. In addition to our grade-level Learning Voyages from February 18-21, several exciting trips are planned for the preceding week:
  • Spain Learning Voyage (Feb 12 - 21): Students will embark on an educational journey through Portugal and Spain, exploring Lisbon, Évora, Seville, Córdoba, and Madrid. This immersive experience will enhance their Spanish language skills while deepening their understanding of the history, culture, and traditions of the Iberian Peninsula.
  • Chorus Trip to O’ahu (Feb 14-15): The high school Alaka‘i Chorus will participate in the Hawaii-ACDA Nā Leo Hou 2025 chorus festival, performing alongside over 500 singers and learning advanced choral techniques. They will also collaborate with Trinity Christian School’s choir and work with guest clinician Dr. Alec Schumacker from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. This trip will strengthen their musical skills while fostering camaraderie through song and shared experiences.
  • 7th Annual Hawaii DEI Conference (Feb 14-16, 2025): A gathering of students and educators to discuss diversity, equity, and inclusion topics.
  • Mock Trial Qualifiers (Feb 14-15 & Feb 22): Students will compete in qualifying rounds on Oahu, determining who advances to the state competition.

We are excited to offer these unique opportunities to allow students to engage in academic, cultural, artistic and personal growth. Whether exploring new places, performing in musical events, competing in academic challenges, or engaging in service projects, we hope to inspire learning and hope that students will fully engage in these experiences.
