This week has been one to focus on Lōkahi – The value of harmony and unity, that when we work together, we can achieve more. I saw this value over and over again this week. When I headed up to Keala View Farm with the 2nd grade, I got to see them working together to plant and squeeze cane juice out of a cane stalk. When I headed out to Hanapepe, I got to be inspired by the first-ever season of girls flag football and what our girls did together to move the ball down the field in order to win 2 games and tie the third! When the Vitals 808 led a special assembly today for the Upper School (grades 6-12), I enjoyed our students engaging with their music and their message of Lōkahi - that there is no place for bullying and that no one need be alone in their hurt, that there are people around us who love and care for us, and we each have the chance to be that source of love and care for others every day.
And of course, an exceptional example of Lōkahi is the effort we have made this year to raise funds for Island School via the gala and the annual fund. Whether this year it has been through the Carnival, the Gala, Jog-a-thon, the end-of-year call for the Voyager Fund, etc., together we make a HUGE difference in helping to make Island School more and more accessible for families and we help make meaningful programming possible on and off campus.
Mahalo for being a part of how we can model for our children Lōkahi each and every day in their lives. Today, our world can sometimes feel as if separation and divisiveness is the goal. And when I look around our campus at the lessons our teachers and staff are working on with our students, at what our families share with their children as a part of the school ‘ohana, I am moved each and every day to strive to live Lōkahi to its fullest.
I wish you a wonderful weekend, and mahalo nui loa for the trust to work with your children through these important years of their lives.
