National History Day State Fair

Last weekend, some of our 7th and 8th graders traveled to Oʻahu to compete in the National History Day State Fair. While on Oʻahu, we also learned about the kapu system and participated in a mock trial at the King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center, we received a tour the State Capitol and met Lieutenant Governor Luke, we talked over lunch about current legislative topics on Kaua'i with Representative Evslin, Representative Morikawa, and Senate President Kouchi, we took a tour of 'Iolani Palace, and we learned about the Battle of Nu'uanu at the Pali Overlook. At the History Day State Fair, 496 students from across Hawai'i competed, 177 of which were in the Junior Division. 7 Island School projects received an honorable mention in their categories:

  • Nala Anakalea and Ella Ventura - “The Legacy of Princess Pauahi” (Junior Group Exhibit)
  • Sophie Cornell, Hana Hoshino, and Raiatea Skabo - “The Bombing of Hiroshima: A Struggle for Human Rights” (Junior Group Exhibit)
  • Vivian Ledesma - “Rising of Women’s Rights and Responsibilities” (Junior Individual Exhibit)
  • Na'e Vaughan - "The Bombing of Kaho'olawe" (Junior Individual Exhibit)
