Biology and/or Chemistry Teacher

Island School (ischool.org) seeks a high school Biology and/or Chemistry teacher beginning in the 2017-18 academic year with a commitment to private education in a college preparatory environment. This is a full time position. The Biology position includes teaching high school Biology, Honors Biology and science electives. The Chemistry position includes teaching high school Chemistry, Honors Chemistry and science electives. A degree in Biology or Chemistry, or closely related field, is required.


Island School, an Independent college preparatory day school for students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. It is located on the island of Kaua’i, the northernmost inhabited island of the Hawaiian Island chain, which, due to its stunning natural beauty, is known as the “Garden Island.”

Island School is a WASC/HAIS accredited PK-12 independent school with a total enrollment of 420 students, with 140 students enrolled in the high school. The high school offers a challenging college preparatory curriculum. Appropriate candidates should have 2+ years of teaching experience with an emphasis and interest in problem based learning, differentiated instruction, teaching a range of abilities in ability based groupings, and experience teaching some combination of Biology and/or Chemistry. Teaching responsibilities include five sections in grades 9-12. Additional responsibilities include serving as an advisor, full participation in the life of the school, leading a club or other initiative, and/or coaching.


Minimum Qualifications include:

  • B.A. degree and 2 + years of relevant teaching experience in a non-profit independent school.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work independently and in a group.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with parents, students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to motivate and manage students.
  • Strong work ethic, adaptability, generous spirit, and confident  working with students.
  • Commitment to and alignment with the School’s mission and vision  

PRE-K TEACHER AIDE (2017-2018 School Year)

Duties include: Assisting teachers as requested, supervising students, setting up, cleaning

up and other related tasks.

Qualifications: Must know about early childhood education and have an ability to relate

to children and the teacher, including organizing and implementing activities as

requested, maintaining order, and ensuring the safety, health and well-being of children

in the program. Must be able to discriminate what is private from what is general

information and keep private information confidential. A background in education is

preferred; current certification in first aid and CPR for children.
