Joan Shaw was born in Japan and raised overseas in a Navy family, graduated from high school in Colorado and attended college there. She met and married her husband, who was from Hawai’i, and after a year in Washington State, they moved to Kaua’i, where they have lived since 1978. Joan worked with the Department of Education for 15 years as an English teacher, reading specialist, teacher facilitator and grant writer before coming to Island School. Over the last 20+ years she has been the Assistant Head, Director of Development, English Teacher and College Counselor – sometimes simultaneously! Joan now focuses on college counseling. Her community service includes being Board President and grant writer at Koloa Early School for ten years serving on the Executive Board of HACAC (Hawaii Association of College Admissions Counselors). Rick and Joan have two daughters, both Island School graduates, and one grandson. She practices Tai chi and Qi gong, and loves to walk, read, travel and quilt.
