E Komo Mai – Welcome

On behalf of the Island School community, greetings and thank you for visiting our Web site. Island School consists of approximately 420 students studying in grades PK-12. Island School offers a traditional well rounded private school structure, while providing a college preparatory educational experience.

There are many good private day schools in the United States, but few are as unique and inviting as ours. The school is located on the slopes of Kilohana in sunny and beautiful Lihue, Hawaii. Our mission is to prepare our students to live productive, fulfilling lives as confident members of society; to express fully the talents of our faculty and administration through a challenging curriculum that prepares students for successful higher education; to provide a safe, nurturing environment that fosters creativity, critical thinking, initiative and respect for self and others.

Research indicates the reason children and parents choose a particular private school is based on several factors:

  1. The College Preparatory Program – Our programs are designed for the college bound student that have an opportunity to take advanced level honor courses with the option to take the Advanced Placement Test at the end of the year. Our college placement process takes great pride in finding the right match for our graduates and spends quality time cultivating and researching successful matches. Our success in placing our students in top-quality colleges and universities is well documented.
  2. Small Class Sizes – Our average class size in the high school is 14 students, middle school is 18 students and elementary school is 20 students. Our teachers are available for tutorial before, during and after school.
  3. Greater Sense of Community – Our students are required to perform 20 hours of community service per year. These projects are numerous in the greater Kauai Island area and include working with Island School special events such as Farm Fair, Fall Round Up or Island School’s Birthday.
  4. Character Development – Discipline, respect and integrity are fully integrated into an Island School education.

We have wonderful opportunities for you to take advantage of at Island School. Whether you would like to be part of our Robotics or Science Olympiad Program, study Mandarin Chinese, create a video to be aired on PBS Hawaii, sing in our select Alaka’i Chorus, participate on one of our KIF athletic teams, display your passion for art, or make friends from around the world, you can find it here at Island School. Our students forge everlasting friendships, prepare themselves for college academically, socially and understand the value of respect and service.

If you’re contemplating joining us, we welcome your interest as you learn about our wonderful school. Enjoy your visit! Please write or call if I can be of further assistance.
Sincerely,
