The Arts
|
Art. Relates to ESLR #4: Students are to recognize,
value, and experience techniques and works related to the visual
arts. Four areas are addressed: 1) Art Production; 2) Art History;
3) Art Criticism; 4) Aesthetics.
ELEMENTARY: Students in pre-kindergarten are encouraged to create and
express themselves through a variety of art experiences. This
forms the foundation in the understanding of art elements and
techniques and develops an appreciation for visual arts. Students in
kindergarten through grade 5 have art instruction with a
specialist at least one trimester per year. Additional art
projects may be part of classroom instruction at the discretion of
the teacher.
MIDDLE
SCHOOL: Students may choose to enroll in a year-long art class, which
includes instruction in drawing, painting, ceramics, 3-D design, the art of many cultures and eras.
HIGH SCHOOL: Students may choose to enroll in a variety of art
electives, including drawing, painting and color, ceramics, art
history, studio art, mixed media, oil painting, and beginning
photography. One trimester of art is required for graduation.

Music. Refers to ESLR #6: Students are to appreciate and participate in
musical experiences, aware of varieties and uses of different musical
techniques and expressions.
ELEMENTARY: Students in kindergarten through 2nd grade have music instruction with
a specialist the entire year. In grades 3-5, they have music for one
trimester per year, with a specialist. In addition, all elementary
students participate in Morning Circle where they sing patriotic and
cultural songs.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: Students may choose to
participate in the Island School Junior Chorus, which is a year-long
performance class.
HIGH
SCHOOL: Students may enroll in the Island School Chorus, which is
year-long, or audition for the Island School Singers, which meets after
school. Courses in keyboarding, ukulele, and music appreciation are
also offered to high school students. One trimester of music is
required for graduation.
The
school's May Day celebration involves music and dance performances from
all grade levels from PK-8, and the three chorus ensembles.

Drama. Refers to ESLR#1: Students are to present with understanding and effectiveness.
ELEMENTARY: Students begin their drama classes in grade three and are
taught by a specialist for one trimester per year. In 5th grade, the
entire class produces a full-length play for a public audience.
MIDDLE SCHOOL: Students may choose to enroll in a year-long drama class, which includes a performance for a public audience.
HIGH SCHOOL: Student may choose to participate in one or two theatre
productions held after-school on a credit/no-credit basis. During the
school day, trimester long classes in acting, scene study, and
improvisational theatre are offered. One trimester of drama is required
for graduation.
