Sports Highlights – week of January 30

Boys Soccer: Coach Sean Magoun, Assʻt Coach Milo Spindt ʻ94

The boys soccer team won their last game of the season against Kaua‘i High to end with a 6- 4- 2 record. The goals in the 2-1 win was lead by Conor Hunt ’20, in the 14th minute of play and Brandon Beydoun ’18, in the 44th minute of play. The defensive group played tough with saves from Andres Elzaurdia ’17,  and solid play from Tai Mitchell ’17, Reece Valencia ’18, Kyle Leibow ’18, and Emi De La Mora ’18. We bid a fond aloha to five seniors, who played their final game as Voyagers: Tanner Tavares, Michael Chung, Andy Anderton, Tai Mitchell and Andres Elzaurdia.

Many thanks to all of the support from parents and other supporters this year helping our boys to push to one of our best finishes!  Go Voyagers!

Girls Soccer: Coach Colby Ayonon ’01; Ass’t Maja Ayonon

Island School’s varsity girls soccer team lost to Makua Lani Christian Academy, 2-nil, Saturday afternoon in a state play-in at the Lions’ home field on the Big Island. Coach Colby Ayonon ’01, reported that the girls gave up the two goals in the second half. He described the opposition as a well-disciplined team with a strong defense. “I kind of feel like our conditioning fell off — maybe because of traveling or whatever. And it was pretty hot out there. The girls did well. We rattled them a few times, but just couldn’t put one in. Our girls fought hard. They ran a lot. They applied a lot of pressure on the ball. It was just not our day.”

We end our  season with a 4-9-0 record, going 4-8-0 in the KIF.

Colby said: “Like I’ve said before, we’re a fairly young team. At least some of these underclassmen got a little taste of what competition is like elsewhere — out of the KIF. First time we actually traveled off-island with our program. So, it’s good motivation to carry into next year and in the off-season, to pick up our level and do some off-season training, and just keep at it.”
