The Music Department is gearing up for its annual trip to O`ahu for the Na Leo Hou All-State Choral Festival February 16-18, 2017. At this year’s festival, Island School students will join more than 350 singers from high schools across the state to prepare for a culminating concert on February 18, 2017 at Central Union Church in Honolulu. Our students will have the exciting opportunity to sing under the widely-recognized Karen Kennedy. Dr. Kennedy is currently the Director of Choral Studies at the University of Miami where she oversees the DMA and MM program in choral conducting. She is also artistic director of the Master Chorale of South Florida. Previous to her appointment in Miami, she held positions as Director of Choral Activities at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa, Artistic Director of the Honolulu Symphony Chorus, and Director of Choral Studies at Towson University.
Island School Alaka`i Chorus members who have attended previous all-state choral festivals continue to speak highly of their experience, and many of our graduates list it among their most cherished high school memories. It promises to be an amazing adventure which, for many students, could end up being one of the most enriching musical experience of their entire lives.
Since the festival’s inauguration in 2010, the Island School Alaka`i Chorus has been the only Kaua`i school to participate in this festival and one of only two neighbor island school to take advantage of this amazing opportunity. Go Voyagers!
Families of Island School Alaka`i Chorus members will be contacted by Mr. Steinbacher soon with final details about the festival.
