Island School’s story has not been fully told until now. From its conception in the mid-70s, when it opened mid-year with just 12 students in an old plantation store, our school has grown to 38 acres and 420 students. Originally encompassing kindergarten to eighth grade, it now offers pre-K through high school, and some of the early students have children attending and graduating from Island School. Over four decades, every aspect of the school has developed – from arts to athletics, from faculty to facilities, from the campus to the curriculum. What has not changed is the vision of a thriving, nurturing, challenging community of learners. Local author and former bureau chief and science writer for The Honolulu Advertiser, Jan TenBruggencate, tells the compelling tale, enhanced by over 250 photos, in this new book Island School: The Voyage.
